Vimla + Joyce: The Story Behind VOYCE Suits
Voyce Suits is named after the founder’s grandmothers: Vimla & Joyce.
Both these incredible women had things to say but lived in a time when women of color’s voices were suppressed. “I’m sure my grandmothers wanted to use their voices but unfortunately could not,” says Falon. “This clothing line is a love letter to them.”
Vimla
Vimla was born and raised in the south pacific island of Fiji in July of 1938.
She has always been a hardworking individual with the love of singing and art. In her spare time, she enjoys creating art and when she is out with family and friends, she still loves to sing.
Moving from Fiji to Canada in 1974 was a huge culture shock for her. She got rid of many traditional Indian clothing because she was told "No one wears that here."
However, she did her best to ensure her family had a smooth move. She became a nurse to help support her family but if it were up to her, she would be in the arts field. Having a career was not something women from her background dreamt about nor did they have a choice.
Vimla loves scary and Bollywood movies. She has amazing cooking skills and will always make sure everyone has eaten first before she fixes herself a plate. She will never let you leave her house hungry.
Joyce
Joyce was born and raised in Texas, USA in October of 1946. She was the eldest of all of her siblings and was raised by her paternal grandparents.
Joyce had dreamed of becoming a lawyer and eventually judge. She had the personality and the determination to tackle these types of careers. However, after having her first child, her career goals were put to the side.
Joyce also took jobs in healthcare to support her growing family while dealing with harsh racism in her environment. Overcoming several mistreatments from society of being a Black woman in the south, Joyce did not let any of that stop her from supporting her family.
Joyce has an impeccable memory (she does her crossword puzzles everyday) and loves to hang out with family and friends. She will make you laugh without even trying. She truly exudes southern charm.
Meet Falon
Falon, the founder, owner, and designer of Voyce Suits, was born in Surrey, BC, Canada, to Shally and Hosea. Even as a child, Falon saw herself creating something big, even if she didn’t know what that was.
As a shy kid, Falon began to find her voice as a teenager and studied business at Douglas College where she finally started to use her voice. This was a pivotal moment for her.
There, Falon was featured in a prophetic advertisement for her college, which read: “Falon Bottley: Storming the business world. Making meaning, not just money. #Purpose” - an affirmation Falon lives out to this day.
In 2020, Falon finally felt ready to start her Fijian/Black-owned fashion brand. She dreamed of creating bell bottoms or women’s pantsuits but wasn’t sure which direction her line should take. Inspiration struck in the form of her mother’s borrowed Italian designer black women’s pantsuit. Falon took the sign and began the creative process to create Voyce Suits.
Falon wasn’t always confident. As a woman of Fijian, Indian, and African-American heritage, there weren't many people who looked like her. But with time, she began to feel more comfortable standing out than blending in.
Falon was never meant to fade into the crowd, and neither our you. That’s why her goal is for people to feel the utmost confidence in her suits. They are designed to make the wearer feel powerful. The pantsuit may not give you a voice, but it is a friendly reminder to use it.
The Power of a Woman-Owned & Fijian/Black-Owned Fashion Brand
At Voyce Suits, we believe true empowerment comes from celebrating and embracing the diversity and uniqueness of individuals. Representation matters. Being a woman-owned and Fijian/Black-owned fashion brand is not just a label for us; it is a reflection of our journey and the struggles and triumphs of generations that came before us. We are building on those trailblazers’ legacy to create a more inclusive and equitable future.
For us, fashion is more than just clothing; it is a medium of self-expression, confidence, and empowerment. By designing high-quality, tailored women's pantsuits, we aim to offer a symbol of strength, elegance, and sophistication to fit and flatter a diverse range of body types. We understand that every woman is unique and deserves to feel comfortable, confident, and powerful in her own skin.
